Fix Plans
Most architectural services boil down to fixing floor plans. For example, the answer to each of the
following questions is “Probably not.”
• Do you really need a hallway chewing up all that extra space?
• Is a fifty foot bedroom actually useful?
• Are any of the closets well placed or spacious enough?
• Did the person who drew the plans know where the sun was going to be?
• Is the plumbing inlet and egress grouped to maximize efficiency and minimize crossover
problems?
• Were the plans drawn up with an understanding of where the electric would enter and address it
properly for grounding field zones?
• Are all the utilities in clean easily accessible areas?
• Are basement, attic, deck, and roof areas well thought out and usable?
• Are windows placed for maximum views, proper lighting, room enhancement, and easy cleaning?
• Can you view the stars, sunrise, or sunset comfortably?
• Does the house address changes in the seasons successfully?
The cost of fixing plans is a simple hourly calculation. Figure no less than ten hours for a well done
(small) job, and anyone who charges less than fifty dollars per hour does not know what they are doing.
